Russia tests a new generation of cermet-based composites
The Russian Central Baranov Aero Engine Manufacturing Institute has successfully carried out a series of tests on a new generation of rotor-piston aircraft. The engine continued to run for four hours in the main mode of operation, completing the main test items specified in the test program. Some other performance testing of the engine will continue, including the life test and plateau climate test on the test bench of the Central Baranov Aero Engine Manufacturing Institute.
The engine's structure uses a new generation of materials with high mechanical-physical properties, namely cermet-based composites and integrated ceramic composites. The engine also features a newly developed new system that uses pressurized air to cool the turbocharger system. Some of the components of the system are produced using Russian raw materials and printed using 3D technology.
The engine's electronic control system is also a new design. It is precisely because of the above-mentioned innovative solutions that the power of the new engine is about double that of the rotor-piston aircraft developed by Russia.
In 2016, the Russian Central Baranov Aero Engine Manufacturing Institute established the FPI laboratory, which was established to further promote the development of Russian new generation aero engine manufacturing technology using ceramic matrix composites and additive manufacturing technologies.
